I pulled Zane Maverick up the hill to the Mexican Cave. We had just escaped from the villain forces of Codysoft, an evil corporation, across the border to Mexico, and he had been shot in the chest when we were escaping and he was bleeding everywhere. His face was very pale. I didn’t think he had very long left, but I wanted to try and help him. I had looked for him for a long time, and this might be my only chance to find out what had really happened in New York all that time ago. We climbed into the cave, and I propped Zane up against a rock.
“Thanks for the fucking help.” He spluttered almost silently, and a load of blood came out of his mouth. “I motherfucking owe you one.”
“That’s Ok.” I said.
“Oh shit listen kid, I don’t have much time.” I tried to protest that he would be ok but he cut me off. “It’s alright. All the time I was in there, I longed to die every single day. They did horrible things to me in there. But there’s something I need to tell you first.”
“Thank you.”
“I need to explain you the truth – about Codysoft.” I gasped and he nodded. “About what really happened in New York, and about all these things started.”
“Alright, but quickly. We don’t have much time.” We were in a cave in a foreign country and he was bleeding to death, and though we had evaded Codysoft today, I knew they would have more nefarious methods of tracking us down, and would probably be at their malignant games already, trying to possess or blackmail the correct people into doing their dark will, to track us down and kill us – or worse. It had also started to rain outside. A big bolt of lightning struck the mountains and I shivered with cold as Zane Maverick began to talk.”
“It all started when I was a kid…”
“Mom!” I yelled.
“What is it Zane?” My mom looked down at me.
“Can I go play video games?”
“Yes but as long as you’re quite. Don’t disturb Cody.” I grinned and I ran up the stairs so I could go play video games. My bedroom was next to Codies. He was a weird kid, who was very quite and even though he was my brother he was so strange. He was also sick. He had a big medical bed, and a heart machine next to the bed constantly showing his heartbeat. They also had to shave his head and he always wore a medical gown. I really hoped he wouldn’t disturb me while I was playing video games.
I went over and played Donkey Kong 64 the wild and crazy adventures of Donkey Kong and all his wacky friends. The barrels and vines were so fun. Suddenly I heard a noise from behind me and I saw it was my annoying brother called Cody.
“Can I play the game.” He asked annoyingly.
“No shut up annoying one.”
“Please bro let me play this game.”
“No I want to play.”
“Ok.” He said sadly and shed a tear as he walked away.
I continued playing my game and he walked away. The next day someone arrived at the house. I snuck to the stop of the stairs and listened in.
“Hello Mrs Maverik, we’re from a special charity for children who are very sick.”
“Oh it’s good to hear that what kind of charity?”
“It’s a charity that helps children who a terminally sick to achieve their wishes, do you know a child like that?”
“Yes my kid called Cody. He loves Surfs Up and he would give anything to be in Surfs Up: The Surfs Up Movie, that’s coming out this sumer and will be starring Shia La Beauf.”
“We’re glad to hear that. We would like to help your son achieve his wish.”
“Like MakeAWish?”
“In many ways we have a similar goal to that charity but we legally have no connection to that charity, and are our own separate group.”
“This is great, he will be so excited.” My mom grinned in pleasure. “I’ll call him down.”
Then she yelled Cody and my brother came running past me down to the hallway.
“Cody, these men are here from a charity that helps very sick little boys.”
“Oh boy will they cure me?” Cody cheered and clapped his hands.
“No I’m afraid not son, but we can do the next best thing.” The man shook hands with my brother.
“Cody what’s your biggest wish in all the world?” My mom asked.
“I want to be in Surfs Up, the cool new movie coming out this summer! It’s a fun movie about these cool penguin characters!”
“Well aha, perhaps we can help with that.” My mom took them into the office to sign all the paperwork and arrange the details for my brother to inspire the movies main character – named after himself … Cody Maverik. The real-life Cody Maverik.
One week later my brother went into the hospital. He was dying, my parents told me. We went into his room. He was very weak. There was a tube coming out of his arm and nose and his head was shaved.
“Hi Zane, it’s good to see you, it’s a shame we never got to play that game … now I suppose, we never will.” I nearly cried. “But just promise me one thing … enjoy the movie.”
Then he closed his eyes. He died the next day. After the funeral, I got home and saw there was a package on the table.
“Oh that must be your brothers movie.” My mom said. “You should watch it.”
I agreed and took the DVD upstairs and opened it. On the cover it said “SURFS UP – SPECIAL EDITION – DO NOT DISTRIBUTE” and underneath in big red letters it said “CODYSOFT”. It gave me chills to see my dead brothers name used in such a way.
I took out the DVD and put it in the TV-DVD player combo, and pressed play movie. The big Codysoft Logo popped up. I watched the whole movie, it was good, but something didn’t feel right about watching it after my brother had died, hearing all the characters calling the main character by the name of my dead brother.
Cody …
Cody…
Cody Maverik …
The name wouldn’t leave my head. But there was something else. Whenever the screen went dark I almost half swore I could see his reflection in the screen, stood there watching with me. It was just my imagination but it still gave me the creeps. I never watched Surfs Up again … until *that* day.
I saw Codysoft a lot more over the years, spreading its influence, creating products and becoming more and more powerful, until they became the monster you know today. But I know, somehow, it all started with that cursed movie, that movie they made with my dying brother.
THE PRESENT DAY
“….And that’s all I know.” Zane whispered. Just then, finally the blood had run out. He looked down at me, with a tear in his eyes. “I know Cody is evil, somehow, but he’s still my brother. Please, if you can, help him, help him break away from this possession.”
“I will.” I promised, but Zane was already gone. I closed his eyes, and laid him down on the floor. I couldn’t bury him because it was pure stone in the cave. Just as I was wondering what to do next, I heard a sound behind me, like cars approaching and footsteps running up to the cave.
“Mr Muerte?” Said a man behind me in a Mexican accent. I turned around. There were six Mexican men at the door to the cave, all holding machine guns and dressed like cartel members. “El Jefe wants to speak to you.”
