Introduction[]

My father works as a storyboard artist in OLM, Inc, and has been doing so since 1995. In 1997, soon after Game Freak released the Pokémon games, Red and Blue, in North America, they struck a deal with OLM to make a TV anime to promote the games. Every week my dad sends me home the latest episode that has been aired, in a DVD format. One day, he sent me home an episode that I didn't recognise.

The Episode[]

The episode begins with the classic intro, but this time, it was the original Japanese translation, so the intro was slightly different. Special thanks to Naka Naka for documenting this intro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-lEahV5Q_o The title card appears after this, and it reads "ライト、カメラ、リアクション!" which translates roughly to, "Lights, Camera, Reaction!" I will include only the English translations of the dialogue for now.

Satoshi (Ash), Kasumi (Misty), and Takeshi (Brock) visit the nuclear power plant, and more specifically, the heart of the operation, the nuclear waste that emits lots of ionizing radiation, contained in a closed vat. Pikachu seems interested in this vat, sniffing it. Of course Ash pulls Pikachu away from the vat. Misty says "What's so wrong?" Ash replies with "Pikachu will be harmed by the nuclear radiation!" They then find a Voltorb. Ash engages in a battle with it. He sends out his Charmander and commands it to use Flamethrower. The Voltorb dodges the attack and in return, blows up.

"It goes wrong"[]

Voltorb's explosion causes the vat to spill out some of its nuclear waste, so the heroes make a run for it. Pikachu, unable to catch up, becomes bathed in the nuclear waste and starts rapidly expanding in size, a common trope in cartoons. This launches the three heroes into a wall, with semi-major blood splatters. I now realized why this episode wasn't aired.

This blood is not hyper realistic like so many other (bad) lost episodes, but it's not really cartoony either. The blood has a sort of "grainy" texture to it rather than a solid fluid, closer to how it actually looks in the real world. It then cuts to a close-up of Ash struggling to get up as Pikachu quickly turns hostile, communicated by a cross-cut.

Ash quickly tries to get Pikachu into his Pokéball for the first time since the first episode, but of course, Pikachu refuses. Misty and Brock get up, and send out their respective signature Pokémon, Starmie and Onix. They win, and, after a short while, Pikachu returns back to normal size, and they leave the power plant for good. The episode ends on a shot of the characters walking away from camera, however, the narrator that normally covers what might happen next is not heard. The "TO BE CONTINUED" border appears, ending the episode.

Epilogue[]

I overall really liked the episode, though I wouldn't show it to a group of kids. I have not destroyed the disk, though I have sold it on an obscure online auction shop which I don't remember the name of. If you ever find it, please document it online, I would love to know how you feel about my dad's product.

I asked my dad about the DVD, and he said it was a joke storyboard that he sent to the animators, and that he was shocked it was actually animated. "Of course as soon as it was passed to the censors, they disapproved the episode, so I saved it to DVD and left it on the counter." He said. This deserves to be online, but I don't have a screen recorder, so, that would be impossible until someone else finds it.

Edit: My dad told me that the auction shop that I sold the DVD on is no longer online. Who knows where the DVD might be then. Maybe it was sent to eBay, maybe to AliExpress, maybe even Amazon! Who knows by now.

Edit 2: My dad told me that I sold the DVD on Freesell, which now is a domain being sold by GoDaddy, confirming that the site is actually defunct.
